The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (G) has emerged as a key source of income for both unskilled and skilled labourers in the country, as revealed by a latest report. As per the report published by National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), the scheme has generated over 52 crore person days of employment in two years.
The report says that out of 52.47 crore person days of direct employment, 20.85 crore person days are for skilled labour and 31.62 crores are for unskilled labour. Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently declared that the PMAY (rural) has set a target of completing one crore houses by 2019.
Giving more information on the report, Amarjeet Sinha, secretary, Rural Development ministry said, “We believe 145 crore person days would be generated by constructing one crore houses by March 2019. But besides direct employment, rural construction also leads to indirect employment by boosting allied sectors involving construction material like bricks, steel.”
Apart from the above work, PMAY has also provided additional work outside the job scheme, which includes a safety net for rural folks.
Launched in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (rural) is the revamped version of Indira Awas Yojana. Till now around 40.07 crore person day houses are constructed while 12.42 crore person days are under construction. The RD ministry provides Rs 1.47 lakh and Rs 1.59 lakh under PMAY for construction of a house in plain and hilly areas respectively.
