VMC i.e. the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is planning to take stringent action against the illegal construction across the city. VMC’s planning wing has also started to figure out the illegal constructions along with initiating the demolition drive.

The sources said that due to the general election, the civic body officials were busy and some developers took advantage of the situation and constructed illegal floors. The maximum number of such illegal structures are located in Andhra Prabha colony, Rajeev Nagar, Ajith Singh Nagar, Urmila Subba Rao Nagar and few more places. The officials of the Vijaywada Municipal Corporation confirmed that nearly 60 illegal constructions are figured till now.

Donepudi Shankar, CPI’s Vijayawada city wing secretary said that the civic body should have kept a tab on illegal construction that was going on during the elections as the developers took advantage of the situation.

Lakshmana Rao, head of the planning wing of VMC said that a special drive is being conducted to identify unauthorized construction as such things will not be tolerated and stringent action will be taken against such developers. He further said that the demolition drive will be carried out according to the VMC guidelines against errant builders.

However, the Vijaywada Municipal Corporation extended the application date for Building Penalization Scheme [BPS] in order to regularize illegal constructions completed prior to 31st August, 2018. Also, the VMC authorities are conducting a special drive to approach builders for their participation in the scheme.

In the fiscal year 2019-20, the Vijaywada civic body estimates revenue generation of Rs. 35 crore from this scheme
