The Pune Municipal Corporation found a route to provide home for more than 165 families from Ghorpadi. The accommodation for these families was searched as they were displaced from the railway land on which an anti-encroachment drive is being carried out.

As a result, the Pune Municipal Corporation [PMC] decided to relocate these families to a Basic Services for Urban Poor [BSUP] programme in the Hadapsar area. The issue of displaced families was raised in the recently held general body meeting an official said.

The elected members in the house raise concerns of the people facing cold and other issues as the anti-encroachment drive was initiated in the winter season. This left no option to many residents other than residing in the temporary makeshift places on the roadside.

According to the member of Pune Municipal Corporation, these people have encroached railway land in Darode Mala, Sant Gadge Maharaj Nagar and Shanti Nagar in Ghorpadi and Koregaon Park. All these illegal dwelling units were demolished during the anti-encroachment drive in November and December 2018.

This issue caught the attention when a senior citizen living on the roadside died because of cold.

Out of the displaced 165 families, nearly 84 have submitted all the papers that showcase them as the residents of this place. However, the 81 applications are under process and they will also be shifted once the process is completed.

A senior official at the Pune Municipal Corporation said that approximately 1,700 tenements are allotted in Vaiduwadi, Hadapsar for the displaced people and more space to absorb people is left in the area.

Umesh Gaikwad, a Corporator said that a letter is sent to the Railways and we have asked them to raise boundary on the land so that no more encroachments can be done in future.
