The Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs told the Parliament that the Government will achieve its target of Housing for All before the year 2022. Earlier, the Modi Government introduced the Affordable Housing Scheme in the year 2016 and is working at a high speed to complete the building of 11 million houses under the PMAY Scheme which has the completion deadline of the year 2022.

Hardeep Singh Puri also denied the media reports that said the construction speed of homes under the PMAY Scheme is too slow. Puri also added that 4.5 million homes will be sanctioned under the same project by the end of March.

The Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs was quoted saying, “I see the scheme progressing at a fantastic rate. I often come across narratives which are ill-informed, without any basis. On the issue of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, our assessment is that we need to build 11 million homes by 2022.”

On the issue of building shelters for the urban homeless, he said, “In the last six months that I have been associated with this ministry, I have had serious concern because the progress that should have been registered in setting up and running such shelters for the urban homeless has been somewhat lacking in results.”

Taking the issue further he said that some State Governments are not taking corrective steps in order to complete the building of home shelters. In the same issue, the Hon’ble Supreme Court directed the State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal to submit the vision document for building home shelters last year.

In reply to which, all these State Governments filed an affidavit but didn’t produce a vision document to build home shelters for poor homeless people in the Urban areas.
