The Nagpur Municipal Corporation that is already facing poor revenue collection has now decided to distribute property tax invoices to the owners from April end.

One of the senior officials said that 4.88 lakh invoices are already printing for the fiscal year 2019-and all the 10 zones will commence invoice distribution from the month-end. The civic body introduces 4% tax incentive on the deposition of yearly property tax prior to 30th June in order to encourage timely tax payment. However, the simple interest of 2 percent is implied on the payments after 30th June.

As per the officials, the owners paying half-yearly tax after receiving invoices in the period of 90-days will be eligible for 2% rebate. However, the tax defaulter will have to pay 2 percent interest in the first half year and 2 percent in the second half year.

In the last financial year, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation collected property tax of Rs. Rs228.45 crore. The official said that the election duty has also affected the property tax collection process.

Abhijit Bangar, Municipal Commissioner expressed concern over the poor tax recovery and said that direct tasks to the tax department and also to the assistant municipal commissioners of all zones. Resulting to which, the NMC will focus on the property tax collection.

According to a report, out of the total 5.31 lakhs, the civic body took no serious action to approximately 3.54 lakh property owners and this calculates to nearly 66% that are defaulting from a decade long time. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation owe approximately Rs. 282 crore from these defaulters.
