The DMRC [Delhi Metro Rail Corporation] is approaching to touch another milestone in its journey. The metro rail is soon going to be the first 100 percent solar-powered train in the world.

From mid-week, the DMRC begin receiving solar power from Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa Solar Power Project and paves the way to be the world’s first 100 percent green metro rail.

A day ago, Delhi metro confirmed about receiving 27 megawatts (MW) power from the MP-based project and informed that it will increase to 99 MW slowly.

In a statement, DMRC said that the power received from Rewa will be used for operational purpose and also for the auxiliary requirement of Delhi Metro. Till now we used the solar power generated by the rooftop plants installed at multiple DMRC premises to fulfill the requirement for the auxiliary requirements like lighting and air conditioning of stations and depots.

Presently, DMRC makes use of solar energy to meet its 60 electricity needs and aims to run all operations on solar by 2021.

The metro rail will then become the first in the world to operate on 100 percent green energy soon after this.

In order to make the solar receival operational, DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh travelled on the solar-powered Metro train from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium station to Central Secretariat on the Violet Line and Manu Srivastava, chairperson, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd (RUMSL), Upendra Tripathi, Director General, International Solar Alliance and other senior officials joined him.

According to the Metro officials, on an average DMRC would receive 345 million units (MU) of power from Rewa annually. In the last year, Delhi Metro used of 1092 MU electricity to run the 373-km long network.

The officials said that we are hopeful to save more than Rs. 42 crore by switching to this solar power as we have started receiving supply from the 750 MW park in Rewa from May 2019.
