The Central Government has sanctioned Rs. 46,000 crores for the rural solar scheme, KUSUM [Kisan Urja Surksha Utthan Mahaabhiyan] with the aim to offer advanced technology for power generation to the farmers.

This go-ahead nod will help India to achieve its target to generate 100 GW solar energy by 2022.

This approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, recently will promote adoption of solar power among farmers and the residential sector under the rural solar scheme KUSUM and rooftop solar schemes.

Out of the total budget Rs. 34,422 crores have been allocated to the KUSUM scheme for farmers and Rs. 11,814 crore will be for the rooftop solar programme. According to the experts, this financial funding will allow the farmers to become exporters of clean and environment-friendly energy instead of being the importers of subsidized energy.

Pujarini Sen, climate and energy campaigner, Greenpeace India termed this scheme as the game-changer for the country and also said that these new incentives for solar agricultural pumps and residential rooftop solar, can be a game-changer for the power generation and distribution sector. This will speed up India’s energy transition away from expensive, polluting, climate-destroying coal power towards cleaner and cheaper energy and ensuring we meet our international solar commitments.

The KUSUM Yojna was introduced by the Narendra Modi-led Union Government in February 2018 with the aim to offer financial assistance to the farmers who have barren or agriculturally unproductive land to set up solar power plants.

Akhilesh Magal, head – advisory, Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI) said that this scheme has the ability to revitalize discoms, by refining farmers from importers to exporters of clean solar energy.
