The Union Government took notice of the PMAY Scheme and had talks with the State Governments while raising their concerns as poor are being deprived of homes under their flagship scheme.  The Narendra Mod-led Union Government took up the cases of most deserving beneficiaries not getting a home under the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna.

The Rural development ministry recently wrote a letter to States and said that about 4,72,000 landless people in the country were identified under the PM Awas Yojana (Rural), but only 12% that are 56,694 families got land from Governments for building a house. These beneficiaries were deprived of land from their respective State Governments.

Out of the targeted 10 million dwelling units, the construction of approximately 6.5 million houses has been completed.

The Ministry further said that landless people are the sole beneficiaries of PMAY (G) [Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna and making provision of land for such people is pivotal to achieve the set target of constructing one crore houses by 2022.

Earlier, in September 2018, Narendra Tomar, the Rural Development minister wrote to all States on this issue and the recently sent letter is said to be the follow-up of the same.

The Central Government is however confident of achieving the target of completing the construction of remaining 9.5 million houses by the set deadline. Apart from these dwelling units, 2.5 million units are in the completion stages.

According to the official, their biggest challenge is to get all the dwelling units in Bihar ready by the deadline as nearly 3,00,000 houses are completed in the state out of their targeted 1.176 million.
