To provide relief to the daily commuters from heavy traffic, the state government has proposed to develop over 30 new flyover and underpasses in Bengaluru. The estimated cost of the total project is over Rs 9,200 and will take approximately 24-30 months to complete.
The proposal has been kept forward keeping in mind a recent survey released by the Bangalore Development Authority in 2017. According to the revised Master Plan 2013, people in Bangalore waste 60 crore man-hours in a year due to shortage of public transport. It further said that about 1.18 crore citizens make 90 lakh trips per day with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) taking half the load.
“Due to this, there are more public vehicles on the road that is adding traffic woes in the city,” Report added. So, it is expected that the new plan will certainly help ease congestion in the city.
Traffic Affected Areas
As per the last year traffic data, the worst affected areas that faces heavy traffic problem in the whole city are Silk Board junction, Marathalli Bridge, Mekhri Circle, KR Puram and Sarjapur.
- Silk Board junction gets commuters traffic from Electronic City and the Outer Ring Road (ORR). At peak hours, the traffic here crawls at the pace of less than 4.5 km per hour.
- KR Puram and Sarjapur also face similar traffic scenario everyday where commuters are stuck for hours together.
- Talking about, Marathalli Bridge which is another affected route. Here commuters travel to and from the Marathalli main road and the ORR.
- Mekhri Circle is congested due to its bottleneck nature. Those commuting from Jayamahal Palace and Sankey Tank add to the existing congestion.
