BBMP, i.e. the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike plans to conduct drone survey in the city to accumulate its tax collection.

N Manjunatha Prasad, Commissioner BBMP gave written information to the police commissioner about the deployment of drones in five wards as a pilot project and this will cover an area of 10 sqkm.

Commissioner wrote to the police that the municipal corporation wishes to collect geospatial data to assess buildings, facades and property taxes. The civic body seeks permission for using UAVs to map with flights under the legally defined height of 120 metres. The DronaMaps Private Ltd will carry out the survey and will create 3D datasets, 2D orthomosaics and identification features like building footprints, roads etc.

Commissioner also informed that it will take 25-30 days to complete the survey in the area that is required to be covered. The result of this survey will prove beneficial to the civic body as a 3D city map will be available.

One of the officials said that five wards are selected to carry out a survey under the pilot project and this selection is due to the difference in nature and property density.  The survey will be beneficial to grab images from the ground level as it will make assessment easy for property tax assessment.

BBMP Commissioner also sought technical support from ISRO to conduct a survey and a letter to the space agency suggests that Prasad is likely to play the advisory role.

Earlier in April this year, the BBMP’s decision to hike property tax was put to hold as the model code of conduct was in placed for the general assembly elections that concluded in the month of May.
