The Nagpur Municipal Corporation listed the city police Commissionerate, income tax department, National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Daga hospital and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital as the property tax defaulter as they owe Rs. 55 crore to the civic body other than Rs.15.50 crore in arrears.
Other than these governmental institutions, the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) too is listed as the property tax defaulters with an outstanding due of more than Rs27.04 crore. The Divisional Sports Complex in Mankapur also makes up to the list of tax defaulters with a due amount Rs. 2.95 crore tax as they are facing a financial crunch.
The city police department is yet to clear the tax due of Rs1.50 crore that includes Rs. 1.35 crore of Hudkeshwar police station, to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The IGGMCH is also a tax defaulter for Rs. 84.53 lakh. Whereas the Superintendent of police, CID (crime) has an outstanding tax of worth Rs. 8.92 lakh.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation penalized the residents for late payment of tax. According to the tax defaulters list of the NMC, the IT department has an uncleared property tax of Rs. 59.83 lakh.
NADT, the apex training institution of the Indian Revenue Service and the Income Tax Department is also the defaulter of more than Rs. 18.97 lakh property tax.
According to the tax department data of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the maximum number of State and Central Government offices are located in the Dharampeth zone under its jurisdiction at 184. The unpaid tax is affecting the property tax recovery in the zone.
The same is followed by Satranjipura zone with 36, followed by Mangalwari (24), Laxmi Nagar (22), Ashi Nagar (21), Hanuman Nagar (16), Lakadganj (15), Gandhibagh (14) and Nehru Nagar (13).
According to a senior official, the Property tax is a major source of revenue for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The police department, government-owned hospitals and income tax institutions owe tax amount to the authority and we have sent notices to them regarding the same.
The officer further said that the maximum government offices fail to make budgetary provisions as they find the payment of tax difficult. Many Government offices prefer making book adjustments with the civic body however many are still defaulted from years.
