Properties of Tax Defaulters Seized

News: Intensifying its action against property tax defaulters, the civic body of Gurugram on Monday decided to initiate actions against property owners. Despite providing the interest waiver and exemption by the Haryana Government, many property owners were not depositing their property tax, following which the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram had to take strict action against them. 

On Monday, a team of officials from the Taxation Branch of Zone-4, led by the Tax Inspector Pankaj Saluja, under the supervision of Zonal Taxation officer – Devendra Kumar with their police force. The officials, with their team, visited nearly 25 properties in the concerned area, where the owners were chargeable for not paying the property tax worth crores of rupees to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).

Out of a total number of 25 properties, the team sealed 16 properties, where one property owner paid its property tax on the spot when the team went to seal his property. Other than this, 8 property owners responsible for not paying their property tax on time have applied to the MCG to correct their property tax. 

This property sealing process was a part of a special campaign, and these properties were situated in Badshahpur, Islampur, Jharsa, Sector-67, Narsinghpur, sector- 74, Sector – 76, Sector – 33, Sector – 48, Sector – 57, Sector – 32A, and Tikri. The tax officials and their team faced protests from the tax defaulters at some locations while they were carrying out the sealing process; however, the presence of police force helped the officials accomplish it better. 

According to an MCG official, such sealing drives will continue to happen in the future as well to penalize the tax defaulters. “It is mandatory to submit property tax for all types of buildings and vacant plots located in the limits of the MCG under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act – 1994. In the event of non-payment of property tax, an 18 percent annual interest is levied, and the property can be sealed. Auction action was taken after cutting the water and sewerage connection of the property,”” said MCG commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh in a statement given to IANS. 

He went ahead and mentioned that the Government of Haryana is already giving about a 25 percent rebate on property tax for the years 2010 – 11 to 2016 – 17 along with a full interest waiver for those taxpayers who pay property tax till March 31, 2021.

Singh mentioned in his statement given to IANS that those property owners who have been paying their property tax on time are receiving the benefit of interest waiver and exemption that the government of Haryana provides. This is a golden opportunity for the state government. He appeals to everyone to pay their taxes on time to enjoy such benefits and schemes by the government and avoid any penal provisions. 

Steps Taken By Municipal Corporation To Recover Their Dues From Tax Defaulters

Not paying the property tax on time can bring bad consequences for the property owners. Which around 16 tax defaulters in Gurugram are already facing. If any municipal corporation does not receive the property tax on time, the area’s developmental activities and related planning go upside down. And the number of tax defaulters in India has grown exponentially in recent times. 

Talking about the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, the civic body had to bear a loss of 39 percent loss in revenue through property tax in recent time. Following this, the officers of the department have now been asked to identify the top tax defaulters every month and send out the final notice to them stating that their property will be auctioned as a last resort if the pending dues won’t be paid immediately.
