In Ludhiana, a large of properties of the civic body are covered under encroachment and taking them under possession is being difficult for the officials from the past some time. In fact, the officials didn’t even know about the exact number of properties but the Geo-tagging of all properties in the city mark the location of such 300 assets.

With the help of Geo-tagging, the civic body is uploading all the details related to these properties on the web portal with the help of local bodies department. However, no survey was carried out by the officials of Ludhiana civic body to find the actual percentage of properties that have been encroached.

According to the records of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, nearly 6,355 encroachments were in the city and only one case is currently filed against the same in the Punjab and Haryana high court. The officials demolished 2,300 encroachments however the remaining are still to be demolished.

Out of the total encroachment, exactly 217 are identified as the religious encroachments.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation accumulated a list of encroachers on the prime properties. The same are segregated into zones like in Zone A, there are 188 encroachments and 174 of these are under litigation. In Zone B and C there are 9 and 29 encroachments respectively. There are three court cases pending for decision in the same. Whereas in Zone D, a total of 271 encroachments have been identified and here the decision on four cases is still pending.

The officials said that the geo-tagging of properties has been completed and they have also attached the present images of the properties too. According to the officials, everything will be available online in some days and anyone can check for the same on the web portal of the local bodies department.

The officials also said that this will help the department to keep a tab on their properties. The officials also said that they have faced strong opposition from the encroachers while demolishing the encroachment.

Similar to this, the officials were attacked by the people living on the government land. In 2017 the encroachers threw stones at the civic body team that went to demolish encroachment at the Rajiv Gandhi Colony. The department is planning to rehabilitate the encroachers in flats so that the land can be vacated.

In the recent times, the Municipal Corporation got land near Jagraon Bridge vacated to redevelop the bridge side. The corporation shifted encroachers to flats in Mundian and similar to this, the encroachers of Rishi Nagar area were also shifted to Mundian.

SS Bindra, the assistant town planner (headquarters) informed about completing geo-tagging and said that the same is now being uploaded on the portal. He also said that apart from the litigation cases, they can remove other encroachments slowly.
