The Lucknow Municipal Corporation [LMC] will soon carry out a door-to-door tax collection drive. The civic body has planned this process after the recently launched OTS [One-time Settlement] Scheme received a lukewarm response from the city residents. Also, the municipal corporation failed to make maximum house tax recovery.
The record book of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation shows more than 4.8 lakh property owners as defaulters for not paying the property tax from past four to five years. Also, the total outstanding tax recovery stands at approximately Rs. 506 crore.
The officials of the civic body will give visit to the house of each property tax defaulter, however, they will make an announcement prior to visiting the homes for tax amount collection. The civic body has bought 100 POS machines to collect payment and the same can also be done through cash, cheque and cards.
In order to encourage the city residents to pay tax, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation offered 20 percent discount with interest waiver on the principal outstanding amount under the OTS scheme that was launched in March. But, not many people came forward to deposit the tax amount even then.
Till now, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation collected approximately Rs.30 crore from 12,000 defaulters. However, Rs. 486 crores are pending for recovery from 48,000 defaulters.
In January this year, the civic body planned to launch a property portal to make it easy for the residents to deal with all property issues. The portal will also give service to calculate the property tax online. Apart from this, the property owners can also transfer property rights to anyone through transfer ownership of property online.
