Due to unavailability of land parcels in the city, the Lucknow Development Authority has prepared a plan to develop housing and commercial units alongside Gomti River in the coming years. The authority has already drafted a proposal on the same and has submitted it to the UP government. Once the approval will be given, LDA will include this to the city’s Master Plan 2031.
According to senior LDA officials, “With rise in the population and numbers of homebuyers in the city the demand of housing units has witnessed a huge jump in the last few years. But, with no land parcel left in the city center, we are only left with the option of developing property along the banks of the Gomti River.”
He further informed that all these developments will be done under the rules of the River Regulation Zones (RRZ). This means that no development will take place within 200 meters alongside the bank of a river.
The above rules were set up on the lines of Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ) that falls under the realm of Environment Protection Act, 1986. The important point behind the development of this norm is to prevent illegal encroachments along the rivers and floodplains in the country.
Elaborating more on the same, Indu Shekhar Singh, Chief Engineer, LDA said, “The authority has adopted this plan after seeing its success in major metro cities like Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, and Bangalore. We have also carried out an ecological study of the project so that it should not harm Gomti River in any face.”
To stop river pollution, the authority has also planned to construct the toilets with customized septic tanks and not linking it with the drain connecting to the river. On the other hand, to channel the kitchen waste, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will be referred for laying pipes…
Once the plan will be approved, the authority with start constructing the housing units soon.
