The Greater Chennai Corporation introduced an app on their website to clear confusions of the property taxpayers. This app named verify your property tax is available on the portal and helps the residents of Chennai city to know about the exact tax amount they had paid earlier along with the future taxable amount. This app will make the property owners know about the revised tax.

Recently, the corporation came to know about the weak grievance system and also got to know about improper information on revised taxes.

That’s not all, as this recently launched app will also let the residents know about why the tax on property is being hiked. Although, the Chennai Corporation said that the revised increase in property tax has not exceeded 50% for residential and 100% for commercial properties.

 R Lalitha, deputy commissioner, revenue department said that out of the examined properties the area of 4.6 lakh properties has increased.  She also shared information that other 2 lakh residents confirmed to be of lesser areas then what is declared and thus got zero escalation in taxes. All these properties will be assessed, verified and the taxes will be revised within 30 days.

The tax has been revised for only 10.34 lakh properties out of total 12.14 lakh.

According to an official, the revenue department will begin hearing of appeals this week and all regional deputy commissioners and the deputy commissioner, revenue department will meet the residents individually to know their issues.

Deputy Commissioner also said that they will meet nearly 50 every day and have already communicated the same with the residents via email. Also, we have asked the residents to bring all the related documents along with them for the meeting.

The Chennai Corporation expects an increased revenue of ₹1,050 crore from ₹720 crore from 10.34 lakh assessments this year. The corporation also expects to earn ₹200 crore to ₹300 crore after the tax is revised in about a month’s time from the remaining two lakh properties including several non-commercial establishments.
