Recently this week, the Narendra Modi-led Union Government sanctioned more than 5.6 lakh dwelling units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana [Urban]. This total the number of Government-funded housing units to over 79 lakh.

The Union ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs informed that under PMAY [Urban] Uttar Pradesh state received sanction of 1,79, 215 units, next is Andhra Pradesh with 1,10,618, Maharashtra 1,01,220, Karnataka 48,729, among others.

The ministry issued a statement and informed that sanctions are given in the meeting of Central sanctioning and monitoring committee. A total of 79,04,674 housing units are sanctioned under PMAY (U).

In the statement, the ministry also said that a total of 1,243 projects with each costing Rs. 33,873 crore along with financial assistance from the Center of Rs 8,404 crore are approved in the meeting.

Till now, the construction of 15 lakh houses are completed and over 12 lakh dwelling units are under- construction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Government launched Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna in 2016 with the aim to offer housing for all by 2022. The scheme is also popular as the Credit-linked subsidy scheme under which the beneficiaries get a subsidy of Rs. 2.67 lakhs.

The Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna is applicable in both urban and rural areas and all the states get dwelling units sanctioned from the union government under the same.

Earlier this month, the Union Cabinet gave go-ahead to the implementation of Phase-2 of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). The Government aims to build 1.95 crore houses under this flagship programme by 2022.
