News: Here’s a piece of great news for many homebuyers. On Tuesday, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved the construction of 56,368 new houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY). The decision to approve new houses’ construction was taken during the 53rd Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting. A total of 11 states and union territories attended this meeting and were asked to use the online mechanism (MIS) to ensure proper implementation and monitoring of the mission.
This was the very first CSMC meeting that took place after the global pandemic lockdown. During the meeting, Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), said, “let’s get into the mode of implementation and execution.”
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana:
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th June 2015, which intends to provide “Housing for all by 2022.” With that, the Central government has also set a target of 1.12 crore houses to be constructed in urban areas between the year 2015 – 2022. The mission provides Central Assistance to the implementing agencies through states and UTs and Central Nodal Agencies to provide pucca houses to all the eligible beneficiaries. The size of a house for the Economically weaker section could be up to 30 sq. mt carpet area; however, the states and union territories have the flexibility to increase the size of the houses after taking approval from the Ministry.
The Ministry also urges India’s states and union territories to ensure that 100% completion and successful delivery of houses be done to all the eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY – U).
During the meeting, Durga Shanker Mishra threw some light and reviewed Light House projects’ progress and the demonstration housing projects (DHPs). Shri Narendra Modi laid the Light House Project’s foundation stone on January 1 to construct new houses in cities including – Lucknow, Agartala, Chennai, Ranchi, Rajkot Indore.
The MoHUA has introduced an Online registration drive for Technograhis to encourage large-scale citizens’ engagement and participation and build technological knowledge, on-site learning, and stimulating creativity to boost these Light House Project sites as Live Labs for Technology Transfer to the sector.
Mishra also mentioned how this mission promotes women empowerment by allotting houses in women beneficiaries’ names or joint ownership. He requested the states and all the UTs to comply with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ advisory at every level and ensure that the female head of the family is the owner or co-owner of the house and the beneficiary’s name is mentioned on the house nameplate under the PMAY-U mission.
Talking about the construction progress under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban, the houses are constructed in various stages. Over 67 lakh houses are currently grounded for construction, and approximately 35 lakh have been completed. The HUA Secretary also told the states that by the end of this year, they should aim towards achieving the target of constructing 60 lakh houses while 80 lakh houses should be grounded for the construction process.
In the meeting, the states also presented their proposals for the revision considering various issues, including topographical hazards, change of preference or verticals, land, inter-city migration, loss of lives, among various others.
The ministry said that the total investment under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban is nearly Rs. 6.31 lakh crore, which has the central assistance of Rs 1.67 lakh crore, Rs. 72,646 crore has already been released.
Under the PMAY-U, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs aims to provide all the beneficiaries of urban India with pucca houses by the end of 2022. It will also be the year when the country will celebrate its glorious 75 years of Independence.
