India has a 515-km operational network of metro tracks in multiple cities and Hardeep Singh Puri, the Housing and Urban Affairs minister said that 15 more cities will soon have more than 660 kilometres of tracks particularly for rapid urban transportation.

While interacting with the members of the Consultative Committee attached to the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, the Minister also informed them on HUA’s initiatives on urban transport in India.

The statement released by the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, both the State Governments and Union Territories are advised to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in accordance with the provisions in the Metro Rail Policy 2017.

As per the statement, “Hardeep S Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs has stated that more than 664 km of metro rail projects in 15 cities are presently under various stages of implementation, while more than 515 km of metro line is already operational in India.”

Hardeep Singh Puri, the minister further said that various new cities are now aspiring to have metro rail systems. To bring together the technology and service providers, policy makers, officials in urban transport from India and abroad, the 11th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference is planned from November 2-4 at Nagpur, with the theme “Green Mobility” to disseminate up-to-date and best urban transport practices information to the cities, the minister said.

Earlier, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs said that there is a need to build the capacity of professionals to comprehend hazard-resistant features and use them while designing and preparing housing projects in the country.
